The gothic cathedral in Freiburg that survived the RAF bombing in November 1944. Nearly 3000 people were killed, and the inner city was destroyed. If it is one thing I have learnt researching and writing 'The Unspeakable' it is this: the utter senselessness of war for humankind - and the endless suffering it creates.
