Marianne Melita Alfred Wilhelm

Marianne (my grandmother), with her siblings, Melitta and Alfred taken around 1900, when Marianne was four years old. Their father, Ludwig, had died in 1899. The children's mother's name was Therese.

Eheschein Bruno Marrinne

Marianne and Bruno's marriage certificate from 16 May 1922 in Troppau. Both were described under religion as 'mosaisch' - of Moses, Jewish. Grete's husband, Eduard Lanzer was a witness, as was Melitta's husband, Eduard Hellmann. Marianne's title was Masters in Pharmacy, Bruno's was Engineer.

Hilde and Marianne

Sisters-in-law; Hilde Wilhelm, Alfred's wife and Marianne - with her children Eva and Hans (my father). Photo from around 1930.

Marianne Ch. 6

Marianne's birth certificate. My mother has written in pencil at the bottom: a later copy of Mother's birth certificate. It is dated 4 November 1910, Marianne was born in 1896.

Marianne late 1930s

Marianne was 42 when the family left Troppau. There is a sense of trepidation in her eyes in this photo, it may have been taken in the months before leaving.

Marianne Alfre Postcard

A post card from Alfred, Hilde and Claus congratulating Hans (my father) on his birthday. They were in Nantes, date possibly 1940. It was very rare for post to get out of occupied France, and the family in London were certainly relieved to have a sign of life from the Wilhelm family.

Marianne's certificate stating she had passed her pharmacy exams in the UK and was a registered member of the Pharmaceutical Society. 7 January 1943.

Marianne Brunos 80th 1965

A photo from Bruno's 80th birthday on 16 July 1965. Smiles all around, but Eva's husband was dying from cancer, and Alfred Karples had died just 3 months previously in a fire at home. From left to right, back row: Bruno, my father, Eva. In the middle, my mother and Marianne. Front row: my brother Jon, Julia and me.
